The papers of George Hare and Spencer Salisbury consist mainly of financial records, legal documents, and correspondence from the Community Savings and Loan Association, the Community Investment Company, and the government of Jackson County, Missouri. Correspondence and minutes of the Rural Jackson County Democratic Club, and miscellaneous memoranda are included as well. The Hare-Salisbury Papers consists of those documents relating to Truman or Jackson County during the Pendergast era created from 1918-30. The collection is less than one-half of a linear foot (approximately 400 pages). The collection has one series, a subject file, arranged alphabetically. The complete papers of George Hare and Spencer Salisbury (1914-1963) are at the Jackson County Historical Society in Independence, Missouri. The complete collection consists of 18 cubic feet of material, approximately forty-two thousand pages. At the request of Mary Pearl Hare's nephew, and in cooperation with the Jackson County Historical Society, the staff at Truman Library reviewed the Hare-Salisbury Collection and photocopied the documents that related to Truman or Jackson County during the Pendergast era. George Hare was born in 1915, and consequently, documents relating to Hare can be found in the Hare-Salisbury Collection at the Jackson County Historical Society and not at the Truman Library. The complete collection was then turned over to the Jackson County Historical Society for further processing. Financial records from the Community Savings and Loan Association, Harry S. Truman and Company, Community Investment Company, and the Jackson County Court and government make up the majority of this collection. The records, many handwritten, appear in the form of charts, graphs, bank statements, balance sheets, inventory lists, and statements of funds. Included in the funds statement of the Jackson County Court for 1924 is a parole board vouchers payable chart that recorded payments to paupers and the insane. The Truman-Barr Insurance Company has one document in the collection--a record from their insurance company. Included in the records of these companies is some correspondence and several handwritten drafts of ads for the Community Savings and Loan. There are several legal documents in the papers. These include the by-laws of the Community Savings and Loan Association; an affidavit and two writs of prohibition relating to a 1926 court case brought against the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners; documents from two court cases (1923-1924) of the Supreme Court of Missouri; and a notice from the Missouri attorney general to Salisbury and Truman, among others, over a claim brought against the Citizens Security Bank of Englewood. Documents of the Jackson County Court and government also include typed and handwritten correspondence, a list of road overseers by district, several lists of civil and judicial officials of the Jackson County Court, lists of precinct captains for the "goat" and "rabbit" Democratic factions in the 1924 and 1926 elections, a Jackson County government report for 1923, several documents related to roadwork in Jackson County, and work estimates from the Office of the County Clerk. There are several documents from the Jackson County homes for the dependent (boys, girls, aged and infirm, Negroes, and detained), including an inventory of automobiles belonging to Jackson County with related correspondence from the homes. Memorabilia from Truman's campaigns for election to the Jackson County Court and minutes from the Rural Jackson County Democratic Club meetings (1918-21) with related correspondence are included. A military book order form from Truman appears in the collection along with an agenda for a celebration of the Charles Lindbergh flight (August 17, 1927). Other materials at the Truman Library relating to Spencer Salisbury and his connection with Harry S. Truman and Jackson County, Missouri during the 1920s and 1930s include the Papers of H. H. Halvorson (includes Community Savings and Loan correspondence from the 1920s and 1930s); the Papers of Jonathan Daniels (includes interview with Salisbury, 1949, and newspaper references to Salisbury from the Kansas City Star, 1914-1956); the Papers of Rufus Burrus; the Papers of Harry S. Truman: Papers Pertaining to Family, Business, and Personal Affairs; and the Papers of Harry S. Truman: Papers as Presiding Judge of the Jackson County Court. The Miscellaneous Historical Documents Collection contains one file with financial records from the Citizens Security Bank of Englewood and other related materials, 1925-1928 (File 790).
