Mary Jane Truman Papers

Dates: 1882-1927.

The papers of Mary Jane Truman consist of financial records, legal documents, handwritten notes, memoranda, correspondence, maps, and other items mostly concerning her brother, Harry S. Truman. The papers relate to Harry Truman's military service before, during, and after World War I; his operation of the Truman farm at Grandview, Missouri; and his work as a road overseer in Jackson County, Missouri. Some of the papers pertain to the activities of Mary Jane's father, John Anderson Truman, and her other brother, J. Vivian Truman.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The documents in this collection consist of material from the estate of Mary Jane Truman relating to her brothers, Harry S. Truman and J. Vivian Truman, and her father, John Anderson Truman. Included are financial records, legal documents, handwritten notes, memoranda, correspondence, maps, and other items.

The Mary Jane Truman papers consist of five series. The first series, which dates from 1905 to 1925, is the Army Records File. It contains documents pertaining to Harry S. Truman's enlistment and service in the Missouri National Guard and his service as an artillery officer with the 129th Field Artillery, 35th Division, U.S. Army in France during World War I.

The Farm-Related Records File includes documents from 1890 through 1927. The material consists of handwritten notes, financial records, and legal documents regarding the Truman Grandview farm. The file also contains family correspondence and account statements.

The General File contains handwritten notes and legal documents from 1882 through 1915 mostly relating to the Truman family piano and Truman's Stafford automobile, and a composition book containing an 8th grade essay by J. Vivian Truman. Also included is documentation regarding the Morgan Oil Company, and patents applied for by John Anderson Truman.

The papers from the Map File include maps and guide books from the Orleans and Dijon regions of France, which appear to be from World War I.

The Road Overseer Records File contains documents from 1915. The material includes financial records such as receipts for poll taxes and work done.

Additional documentation regarding the relationship between Harry S. Truman and Mary Jane Truman, including their correspondence from 1945-1953, can be found in the library in the President's Secretary's Files (Family Correspondence File).
