Summary: This is the log from the President’s vacation cruise of August 16-September 2, 1946, his first real non-working vacation since taking office in 1945. The cruise took place board the U. S. S. Williamsburg, the presidential yacht. Their first stop was the Naval Air Station at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. While in Rhode Island, the President visited the Naval War College at Newport. As the ship prepared to leave Quonset Point, a bad storm broke out and rather than sailing further north as planned, the President suggested sailing to Bermuda. The ship contacted the State Department to obtain permission from the British authorities to visit Bermuda with a minimum of ceremonial duties. The ship arrived in Bermuda on August 22, and the Governor of Bermuda boarded the Williamsburg to call on President Truman, and Truman visited the island and called on the Governor later that afternoon. In addition to swimming, sunning, and fishing, the President took a small tour of the island with staff from the U. S. Naval Operating Base at Port Royal Harbour, Bermuda. |
