General Marshall and Mr. Pawley Join the President's Party for the Day

Summary:   Before the President’s arrival at Key West in early 1949, the Little White House underwent a complete redecoration, and this log contains numerous photos of the Little White House interiors. Some rooms were also expanded, and the fire protection systems were updated. The beach frequented by Truman and his visitors was also renovated, with plants, a pavilion, and a concrete shuffleboard. While on this trip, the President visited Rollins College, in Winter Park, where he received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree. On a more controversial note, some press and newsreel photographers obtained permission to go aboard a naval airship to get some background shots of Key West and the naval base. However, some of Truman’s staff felt the press got too close to the vacationers on the beach and the Little White House and compromised the President’s safety and privacy. They insisted upon reviewing the footage and ended up censoring portions of it.
