COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Irenee Juno, who was also known as Irene Juno or Juneau, consist mainly of correspondence, handwritten notes, newspaper clippings, photographs, invitations, and memorabilia that document Juno’s work as a newspaper writer, radio personality, and publicist. These materials depict Washington D.C. society, the actions of distinguished persons, and Juno’s own presence as a writer, publicist, and friend.

Correspondence included in the collection pertains to Juno’s work as a publicist for Washington events such as the Cherry Blossom Festival in 1947, the President’s Cup Regatta in 1946, and the Inaugural Ball of 1953, while also illustrating her relationship with Bess Wallace Truman and members of the White House staff. Personal correspondence to Juno from Mrs. Truman comprises most of the handwritten notes within the collection.

The newspaper clippings in the collection illustrate the lives of many influential women during this time period and the accomplishments of GOP women’s clubs, in particular the activities of Republican leader Louise Gore. Many clippings record the social activities of Bess Wallace Truman, Margaret Truman, and President Harry S. Truman. The activities of Mrs. John R. Steelman, wife of a Truman aide, and Edith “Drucie” Snyder, daughter of the Secretary of the Treasury, are also noted. Lastly, a few of the clippings address Juno’s own contributions as a writer, interviewer, radio personality, and publicist.

The photographs within the collection depict the portraits of Greta Kempton, while also documenting the activities of the Truman family and other influential individuals. Greta Kempton, a renowned portrait painter, is also mentioned in the newspaper clippings. The brochure for her exhibition in Washington in 1949 is the only piece of memorabilia in Juno’s papers.

The invitations document the public and private events Juno attended. While most of the invitations pertain to visits with Mrs. Truman at the White House, they also include White House visits with Mrs. Roosevelt and Mrs. Kennedy, the inaugural balls for Eisenhower and Truman, a Haitian Independence Dinner, and a piano concert.

Related collections at the Truman Library include the papers of Harry S. Truman (White House Social Office Files) and Greta Kempton.
