COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The records of the Trinity Episcopal Church consist mostly of letters from Harry S. and Bess Wallace Truman to their friends Oscar and Linda King. The collection also contains newspaper clippings, programs, photographs, and postcards that pertain to both the church and the Truman family. The collection is comprised mostly of photocopies and original documents that were retained by the church.

Bess Wallace Truman was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church all of her life. She married Harry S. Truman there in 1919 and her daughter was married there in 1956. Linda King and Bess Wallace were members of the same bridge club. Bess wrote Linda often while she was in Washington D.C. Many of the letters are thank-you notes for gifts or flowers from the King family. Often, Bess mentions her gratitude for receiving a favorite item from home that she could not purchase in Washington D.C. Most of the letters in this collection are from Mrs. Truman.

The collection also contains newspaper clippings from Margaret Truman’s marriage to E. Clifton Daniel and Truman’s speech at the church’s dedication of a new wing. Additionally, there are invitations and programs from the funeral of Bess Wallace Truman and various printed materials concerning the Trumans.

Related collections at the Truman Library include the papers of Harry S. Truman (President’s Personal File 418) and the papers of Mary Shaw Branton, whose mother was also a member of Mrs. Truman’s bridge club.
