Introduction:
Although George
Washington was the Commander of the Revolutionary troops who fought
to win our freedom from Great Britain, he owned slaves. Your assignment
is to use the internet web site www.mountvernon.org
and your own knowledge to answer the questions and understand how
he could be a freedom fighter but a slave owner at the same time.
Directions:
1. Go to

2. Click on Education Resources.
3. Click on the image labeled "George Washington and Slavery."
4. Read the information. Answer the following questions:
- How many
slaves were at Mount Vernon when George Washington died?
- Slaves did
most of the work at Mount Vernon. List three jobs slaves did at
Mount Vernon.
- What chores
do you do at your house?
- Slaves worked
six days each week. What day were they off work?
- What days
do workers have off today?
