Come See President Washington's Home!
Mount Vernon Mansion Open for Tours!
President and
First Lady, George and Martha Washington, have most graciously agreed
to open their lovely plantation Mansion at Mount Vernon to the public.
Tours of the Mansion will begin soon. The first thing that the Washingtons
must do is hire an advertising agent to design a billboard to attract
visitors. The billboard must have information about days, times,
and the price of admission, as well as interesting attractions that
the public will be able to see. The agent who will design the billboard
must be hardworking, honest, and dependable.
George and
Martha are lucky! They have found a great advertising agent-you!
Now your work
begins.
As you view the Mansion or after viewing the Mansion, make a list
of the features of the home you especially like. For example, large
rooms, a nice view of the Potomac, or pretty doors. Keep a list
on a pad.
You, the advertising
agent, must market the home to the public so they will come to see
Mount Vernon. The best way in the 18th century to advertise the
public viewing is to place a billboard on the road that leads to
the nearby village of Alexandria.
Design a billboard
to tell folks about this wonderful opportunity to see Mount Vernon,
home of George Washington.
Some interesting
facts you may wish to think about as you plan your billboard are:
the Mansion has about 9,000 square feet of living space, 13 fireplaces,
22 rooms, and a library. Remember that Mount Vernon reflects the
personality and life of its owner. The main attraction for many
people is the fact that Mount Vernon is home to a great man; therefore,
you may want to include some information about the accomplishments
of George Washington.
Materials needed:
Colored pencils, crayons
Construction paper (optional)
Notes on what students see as they view Mount Vernon
Imagination!
Student Directions:
From your memory and from the notes you made as you viewed the miniature,
design a billboard to advertise a tour of George Washington's home.
(If you are unable to view the exhibit in person look at the exhibit
photos for ideas).
