Additional information (in case students might ask):
1. What is the Piazza? The east entrance to the Mansion. Columns support a roof that protects a porch. The Piazza was a gathering place for the Washingtons, their family, friends, and visitors.
2. Who was Lafayette? Lafayette was a young French nobleman who came to America during the Revolution. He fought with the colonists and helped to get French aid for the colonies. He was very close to General Washington and thought of Washington as his "adopted father."
3. Who was John Paul Jones? Jones was America's first naval hero. His ship, the Bonhomme, defeated the British ship, the Serapis.
4. Who was Nelly Custis? The youngest granddaughter of Martha Washington. Nelly was raised by the Washingtons at Mount Vernon.
5. What was the Bastille? An old prison in Paris destroyed in 1789 by a mob.
