George Washington: Fun Facts

George Washington...

was born on February 11, 1732, according to the calendar used at that time but when England changed to the modern calendar, his birthday became February 22.

had a hard time with spelling as a schoolboy.

had no middle name.

did not attend college.

loved to ride horses. His favorite horse was named Nelson.

always said a prayer before eating his meals.

wore a size 13 shoe.

could crack a nut between his thumb and forefinger.

loved to dance. He danced for three hours when he was 64!

did not wear a wig as was the fashion of the day for many men but he did powder his hair.

refused to accept any pay for serving as commander of the soldiers during the Revolution.

stood 6'3" which was considered to be very tall especially in colonial times.

wore false teeth made of lead, animal teeth, ivory, and some of his own teeth.

ordered that the six white horses in his stable had their teeth brushed every morning.

had no natural children but was the stepfather to Martha's children from her first marriage.

ate four meals per day. Breakfast at 7 a.m., dinner at 3 p.m., tea at 6 p.m. and a light supper at 9 p.m.

introduced the mule to America. He received a donkey as a present from the
King of Spain and bred it with one of his horses.

owned 884 books according to the inventory of Mount Vernon taken after his death in 1799.

is the only President elected by unanimous vote of the electoral college.

visited only one foreign country-the West Indies.

has one state, thirty-three counties, seven mountains, and nine colleges named after him.

is one of four Presidents whose face is carved on Mount Rushmore.

is the only President who never lived in the White House.

believed that shaking hands was beneath a President so he bowed to his White House visitors.
