FAQ: What is the significance of the flame in the courtyard?

The Tirey J. Ford American Legion Post (No. 21, Independence, Missouri), dedicated the "Eternal Flame of Freedom" to the memory of President Harry S. Truman, a fellow legionnaire, at the 72nd anniversary of the American Legion, on March 15, 1991. The flame was first located outside of the courtyard, in the area where the Liberty Bell sits. After two moves within the courtyard, it’s final resting place, is in front of the glass wall looking out from the new addition (triangle).

The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is one of twelve Presidential Libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration.
