Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum

January 29, 1949

The President had a few meetings in the morning. The most interesting part of his day dealt with a letter he had signed off on that was a reply to Chaim Weizmann's congratulatory note on his election. Chaim Weizmann was the head of the new state of Israel. The President had signed a letter that acknowledged the congratulations but also compared the lives of the two men. After that, the letter began to discuss issues involving Israel and boundaries, which were delicate issues back then, as they are now. The gist of the letter basically endorsed all of Israel's claims. There was a fear that the letter would somehow go public, it had inexplicably been sent through regular mail. Truman remembered signing it, but could not remember if he had read it.
