Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum

January 31, 1949

The White House issued a statement announcing recognition of the governments of Transjordan and Israel. The President had a full day of meetings which included the Vice President and the Speaker.

The morning papers carried stories about a reply written by Joseph Stalin to questions submitted by the International News Service. Stalin said he was willing to meet with President Truman in an effort to reach a peace pact. The President joked that maybe he should reply to the Soviet News agency, Tass, but agreed nothing should be said.
