Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum

October 18, 1948

October 18, 1948 Today, the President spoke to the American Legion Convention in Miami (Speech 244). He said that although the United States would "take a firm position where [its] rights [were] threatened," the U.S. did not want war. He talked of the three major moves of foreign policy in Europe that the U.S. had taken in the past 2 years. This included the economic and military aid sent to Turkey and Greece. He ended the speech by saying that the United states should take every opportunity "to strengthen the United Nations for the great undertakings which lie ahead." To learn more about the aid sent to Greece and Turkey (Marshall Plan), go to Marshall Plan Collection
