October 25, 1948
The 25th held the honor of having the most controversial campaign speech delivered in Chicago. Truman proclaimed,"When a few men get control of the economy of a nation, they find a 'front man' to run the country for them, they put money and influence behind Adolf Hitler." He went into further explanation by describing,"how Hitler used anti-Semitic propaganda as a way of stupefying the German people with false ideas while he reached out for power." Headlines the following day were "PRESIDENT LIKENS DEWEY TO HITLER AS FASCISTS' TOOL." The President's speech schedule included a run through Indiana, starting in Garret, then to Gary and ending at Chicago Stadium.
