Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum

October 27, 1948

Truman uses humor in his speech. The "doctor" was there again, only this time as the White House Physician, whom Truman consulted because of his suspicion that he was being followed. The jokes brought Madison Square Garden to its feet: "The White House told me not to worry. He said: 'You keep right on your way. There is one place where that fellow is not going to follow you-and that's in the White House."

The President's speech schedule began at 8:14am then moved to Thompsonville, Connecticut at 10:35 and Hartford at 11:00. Then at 12:25 pm he moved back to Springfield, Worcester, Framingham, and Boston, Massachusetts.
