Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum

November 15, 1948

President Truman went for a 30 minute walk at 6:15 a.m. on the morning of the 15th. After breakfast he escorted Mrs. Truman and Margaret to the fishing boats for deep sea fishing off Key West. Senator, and vice president-elect, Alben Barkley left with Senator McGrath and a few others by car bound for Washington. They elected to travel by car to take advantage of the scenic drive along the east coast.

The President and a number in his party once again visited the beach and toured nearby Fort Taylor. President Truman also joined in a little high jinx that afternoon when a couple of friends, Mr. Connelly and Mr. Ross arrived at the "Little White House" at Key West. Among the merriment was a parade which featured a local black high school band and cheerleaders and streamers of "bath towels, bed clothing and miscellaneous paraphernalia strung across the street at intervals of about one hundred feet."

The President and Mrs. Truman sent the following message to England's Princess Elizabeth: "Mrs. Truman and I are delighted at the news of the birth of a son [Prince Charles] and felicitate you and the Duke upon this happy occasion. Harry S. Truman" Truman also sent a telegram to the retiring Canadian Prime Minister, Mackenzie King.
