Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum

November 7, 1948

On the way to Key West Truman stopped at Cherry Point, North Carolina to attend a service at the First Baptist Church. A crowd of more than 1,000 assembled at the air station to see the president.

Truman arrived in Key West, Florida later in the day. The first thing Truman did when he reached Florida was to call and report his safe arrival to Bess. Later Truman and the members of his party changed to sports clothing and settled down to a vacation routine. Dinner was served at 7 p.m. and following dinner the motion picture, "Julia Misbehaves" was shown in the living room, although the president didn't attend the movie.

Truman wrote to his sister Mary Jane Truman, back in Grandview on Nov. 7, 1948. He wrote his sister about Bess's bad cold and the reception they received when they returned to Washington. He also complained about the condition in which they found the White House, which subsequently prompted them to reside for nearly a year in the Blair House across the street.
