Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum

September 18, 1948

50 years ago today, Truman was on an election campaign Whistle Stop through Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. Read about his visit in Oxford, Iowa where he gave a rear platform speech at 8:50 am. You can also view a copy of that speech. Note, that, like most of his campaign speeches, he begins with a joke and specified comments regarding the town he is visiting. This was part of the campaign strategy.

Read a one-page Press Release announcing the members of The President's Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services, dated September 18, 1948, by Eben A. Ayers, Assistant Press Secretary, President Harry S. Truman.

The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is one of thirteen Presidential Libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration.
