Barry School is located in the suburban Kansas City (north) area. We are a K-8 school with a middle school population of approximately 125 students. What we lack in size, we make up for in enthusiasm and school spirit!! We are very proud of our school and its students. We started the year with an integrated learning unit on Egypt. In conjunction with Mrs. Marshall's Social Studies classes, we studied Egyptian life and culture, leaders and history. We sampled Egyptian food, wrote in hieroglypics and "toured" an Egyptian tomb with the help of the Internet. Our web site activity highlighted the Truman Trivia area of the Whistlestop web-site. After beginning the year with a basic research project using primary and secondary resources, we were ready to begin work on our web-site project. After reading a biography of Harry Truman and brainstorming ideas about areas of his life and political career that interested them, students divided into pairs and put together a more detailed study of their area of interest. Students then had two options available to them. They could either report on the area of Truman that they chose or interview someone in their family about life in 1948 or the Truman election that year. We ended the 1998 year with a visit to the Truman Library and we were able to see and read more about the areas that we researched. We look forward to our Project Whistlestop technology project that we will begin in February. Thanks for visiting our website! |
