January 18, 1999 Bess Wallace Bess Wallace was born on February 13, 1885 in Independence, Mo. She met Harry at Sunday school when she was five years old. She and Harry got married in 1919 after he returned from World War I. Bess did not want to be involved in politics. When she was with Harry, she did not want to be the center of attention. Bess did not want Truman to run for a second term as president, but she felt like he wanted to be elected on his own merits. She supported whatever he wanted and Harry wanted to finish the job as president on his own. Bess died on October 18, 1982 when she was 97 years old. She is buried at the Truman Library next to her husband.
