I was in fifth grade when President Truman came to my town on a train. My mother and father took me down to the railroad station, and we watched as the train pulled in and stopped. President Truman came out on the back observation car platform and waved to the people and gave a short speech. President Truman was wearing a tan suit and a felt hat. He looked just like his pictures. His wife was not with him on this trip, but his daughter, Margaret, was, and we were all so surprised at how much more beautiful she was in person than in photographs. She was blond, pretty, and had a gorgeous peaches and cream complexion.

Secret Service men were there and mingled in the crowd. They were so obvious because my town was sort of a hick town (5,000 population in 1948), and these men were wearing expensive suits and had really good haircuts.
