Harry S. Truman and Bess Wallace were married after Truman returned from active duty in World War I. Bess was 34 years old and Harry was 35 years old. They had met in Sunday School at the First Presbyterian Church when Harry was about 8 years old. T hey graduated from high school in the same class, and while friends, never seriously dated during those years. Harry was always infatuated with her, but admired her more from a distance. Many years later, Harry worked on the family farm in Grandview and occasionally visited his aunt who lived across the street from the Wallace family. On one such visit, Harry met Bess once again and struck up a long conversation which eventually led to a long romance and hundreds of letters.
