White House Balcony - Letter 2

COPY -- Original is in the Permanent File under "White House Balcony"

January 9, 1948

Dear Mr. McDonough:

I have your letter of January sixth requesting information with which to reply to the inquiry you received from Mr. Charles H. Griggs of Los Angeles.

There is little I can add to the details already published about the balcony to be built within the South Portico of the White House. It will be a porch of steel, concrete and tile construction on the floor level of the family living quarters, and entirely within the columns of the portico. It will be similar to the porch outside the floor below, on which the public rooms are located and, like that, will have an iron railing about the perimeter.

The project was approved by Mr. William Adams Delano, one of the most distinguished architects in America and a former member of the Commission of Fine Arts. Mr. Delano is acting as architect in carrying out the work. The contract provides for an expenditure of approximately $15,000, which covers materials, labor and the customary construction costs.

Sincerely yours,

CHARLES G. ROSS
Secretary to the President

Honorable Gordon L. McDonough,
House of Representatives,
Washington, D. C.
