Return to Truman's Letters to Margaret Folder

Hot Springs, Ark.
Sept. 14, 1937

My dear Little Big Daughter:-

Anyway I'll always think of you as my little bit of a girl. Your dad carried you night after night when you weren't over a foot and a half high and weighed about fifteen pounds. Your mamma was wondering if you'd have straight legs and curly hair and I was hoping you'd have a good brain-which you have. Now you must use it and put everything useful you can into it while it is young and active. When you have a head full of learning no one can take it away from you. Money and property and position you can lose but a well developed brain never. Here is a check for last week and I hope I never have to fine you again. I don't like it any better than you do.

I'm sending you a package of pecans and praelines. Give Natalie and May and Christie some of the candy and give Mamma Truman some of the pecans. She likes 'em very much.

Your dad's in a hospital but not sick---to keep from getting sick. They are taking me over the hurdles though.

Kiss Mamma and you can write me at Army & Navy Hospital Hot Springs. Lots of love from

Dad.
