Description
This uniform was purchased by Harry S. Truman in June 1917 shortly after he was commissioned a First Lieutenant. It was taken to Camp Doniphan, Oklahoma, and finally to France were it was almost certainly worn in combat.

An American officer was distinguished by braid on both cuffs and by his collar ornaments. In this case, the pair of bronze "U.S." insignia with superimposed "N.G." indicate an officer of the National Guard. The traditional crossed cannon devices of Artillery include Truman's regimental number. Rank insignia was worn on the shoulder straps. Shortly after the Armistice, shoulder sleeve insignia were adopted by many units of the American Expeditionary Forces. The 35th Division insignia had a variety of color combinations with red and yellow being used by the 129th Field Artillery Regiment. The lower left sleeve has a single gold service chevron indicating six months overseas service. Field equipment includes a whistle and a Model 1912 pistol belt fitted with a Model 1917 revolver cartridge pouch.
