Description

General Ralph Truman, cousin of Harry S. Truman, discusses his relationship with Mr. Truman. Included in this interview is a discussion about the 35th Infantry Division display at the library and annual reunions of the Division since 1947. General Truman also comments on the 1948 Life magazine photo with caption "Truman Stumbles." Sound only.

0:05   Unidentified voice says "sound 105." This recording of General Ralph Truman, cousin of Harry S. Truman, consists of questions (from possibly Merle Miller) and answers.
2:31   General Ralph Truman discusses his relationship with Harry S. Truman. He states they were "good friends all of my life." He states the family were "good Christian people" whom he had the utmost respect for. The recording begins with a discussion of an unidentified emotional event.
3:16   General Truman discusses a trip to Washington in 1946 to consult Harry S. Truman about planning a reunion of the 35th Division. There followed a very successful reunion in June, 1947, with reunions each year since. General Truman discusses these subsequent reunions, including one at which General Eisenhower was a guest.
    Unidentified voice says "second stick, sound 106."
5:43   General Truman responds to interviewer's question about the 35th Infantry Division display at the Harry S. Truman Library, stating that Harry S. Truman asked to meet him at the library. The lower level was selected by Harry S. Truman and staff for hundreds of items to be collected and exhibited.
7:25   Interviewer asks about a Life magazine photo in 1948 showing a half-empty auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska with caption "Truman Stumbles." General Truman states the meeting place had been changed three times that afternoon in a "deliberate attempt to embarrass President Truman."
8:54   General Truman speaks about the 1948 election: "I had no doubt but that he would win reelection."
