Notes: Revolutionary War Record states James Holmes, Junior served as ensign and first Lieutenant in Captain Slaughter's company, 7th Virginia Regiment under Colonel Daniel Morgan. He was transferred to this regiment after having enlisted August 24, 1776 to serve three years in Captain Graybell Long's company of the 11th Virginia Regiment. He was in the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Trenton. He was discharged from service May 2, 1779. He applied for pension on September 13, claiming enlistment in Culpepper County, Virginia, and it was allowed in Madison County, Virginia 1819.

Some records have stated that James Holmes was the son of Edmund and Sibella Halley thus confusing him with a first cousin of the same name.
