AGENCY HISTORY NOTE

The U. S. Department of State maintains embassies, consulates, and missions in hundreds of countries around the world. When former President Harry S. Truman died on December 26, 1972, condolence books were opened at these posts to allow visitors to write messages of sympathy.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

This collection contains material collected by the U. S. Department of State in 1972 and 1973 at the time of the death of Harry S. Truman. The materials mostly consist of condolence books opened at U.S. embassies, consulates, and missions abroad. Also included are messages received by the State Department from foreign officials.
