BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Charles F. Darlington (also known as Charles F. Darlington, Jr.) was born in New York, New York on September 13, 1904. He was educated at Harvard, Oxford, and the University of Geneva. Darlington served in the financial section of the League of Nations from 1928 to 1931 and was an official with the State Department from 1935 to 1939. In 1945, he helped draft the United Nations Charter as secretary of the Coordination Committee. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed him ambassador to Gabon, where he served for four years. Darlington died in New York, New York on April 11, 1986.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Charles F. Darlington consist of reports, memoranda, printed materials, and other documents relating to his work as a member of the U.S. delegation to the U.N. Conference on International Organization in San Francisco. The collection is arranged in one series, a United Nations Conference File.

The bulk of the material in the collection consists of records of the U.N. Coordination Committee, which was charged with preparing the U.N. Charter. Darlington served as secretary of this committee. Other materials include copies of the Charter; proposals from the Dumbarton Oaks Conference; Darlington's memoirs of the U.N. Conference in San Francisco; and daily summaries and official memoranda from the San Francisco Conference.
