COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Papers of Robert M. Gilmore are almost entirely comprised of personal correspondence written by Harry S. Truman to Robert M. Gilmore from 1953 to 1961. The collection also includes two thank-you letters from Bess W. Truman to Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore, written in 1955 and 1970, and a few other items. The collection is comprised of one series, a Chronological File, arranged chronologically by folder title.

Robert M. Gilmore was the Assistant Vice President of the Southern Pacific Company in San Francisco, California. Gilmore’s secretary at Southern Pacific was James E. “Gene” Bailey, who would later work as Truman’s personal assistant at the request of the former President. Several of Truman’s seventeen letters mention Gene’s work for Truman. Most of the letters in the collection were written as signs of appreciation for previous letters, visits, and gifts.

Also included in the collection are envelopes from letters sent by Truman, an invitation to Margaret Truman’s wedding, invitations to events marking the dedication of the Truman Library, an acknowledgement of Gilmore’s acceptance of the invitation to the dedication, an admittance card to the ceremony, and a schedule of events relating to the dedication.

Gilmore’s letters to Truman and related information can be found in the Harry S. Truman Papers, in the Name File of the Post-Presidential Papers, under “Gilmore, Robert M.” and “Bailey, James E.”
