COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Papers of Robert W. Maxwell consist of correspondence, certificates, printed materials, diaries, photographs, and other materials related to his personal life and his work as a government official.

The collection includes photographs of Maxwell and his relatives along with genealogical records and a handwritten "History of the Maxwell Clan." Between 1914 and 1918, Maxwell was a Boy Scout, and he kept related diaries, certification cards, patches, and pins. Also included are report cards, certificates of school organizations, and high school and college yearbooks from 1918 and 1922-1924.

Later in his career, Maxwell kept diaries covering the period from 1944 to 1954. The diaries consist mostly of brief notations of appointments. He also continued to collect certificates, many of them related to his work in government finance and accounting. The collection also contains information about the First International Congress of General Accounting Offices, held in Havana, Cuba in 1953 (Maxwell was the chairman of the U.S. delegation); personnel records, reports, and printed materials concerning Maxwell's career in the Treasury Department; invitations to the White House and various events; and reproductions of documents signed by Robert Morris and Alexander Hamilton, during the early history of the United States. Much of the correspondence centers on Maxwell's retirement from government service in 1960, and consists of congratulatory messages from friends and colleagues.

Other collections at the Truman Library relating to the Treasury Department include the papers of John W. Snyder, Secretary of the Treasury from 1946 to 1953.
