COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of John P. McEnery consist of printed materials, memoranda, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and other items relating primarily to the Democratic Party in California from 1944 to 1948 and the Presidential campaigns of 1944, 1948 and 1956. The collection is comprised of one series, a Subject File, arranged alphabetically by folder title.

Among the printed materials are issues of the Democratic Digest (1946-1950); other Democratic Party publications; programs for special events; and pamphlets for the 1944, 1948, and 1956 Presidential campaigns.

The newspaper clippings contain articles on the 1944, 1948, and 1956 Presidential campaigns, the Democratic State Central Committee, and the 1949 Inauguration.

The correspondence includes letters and telegrams from various members of the Democratic Party. The memoranda cover activities in the Democratic State Central Committee as well as some specific topics such as efforts to draft a policy statement for the committee. Other items in the collection include speeches and party financial records.

McEnery’s papers include information on the split in the California Democratic Party between supporters of President Truman and former Vice President Henry Wallace in 1947-1948. As Vice Chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee, McEnery, a Truman supporter, clashed with the Chairman, James Roosevelt, who was involved in efforts to nominate Dwight Eisenhower as the Democratic Presidential candidate in 1948.

Other materials at the Truman Library related to John P. McEnery include an oral history interview with McEnery.
