COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Papers of Newbold Morris consist of the contents of six scrapbooks compiled by Mr. and Mrs. Morris. The scrapbooks mostly contain newspaper clippings, but there are a few photographs and other items included. The material relates to Mr. Morris's legal and political career in New York City and Washington, D.C. The collection is comprised of one series, a Scrapbook File, and is arranged by volume number. (No Volume II was received by the Truman Library.)

The newspaper clippings pertain to such topics as Morris's political activities in New York City; his service as President of the New York City Council; his campaigns for Mayor of New York City; his involvement in various civic, charitable, and cultural organizations; his brief service as Special Assistant to U.S. Attorney General J. Howard McGrath in 1952; his dismissal from that post in the midst of his efforts to investigate alleged corruption in the Executive Branch; and his subsequent career as New York City Parks Commissioner.

The few photographs included in the collection are of Mr. Morris and events in New York City. The memorabilia relates primarily to public functions, and includes invitations to various events as well as greeting cards.

More information about Newbold Morris can be found at the Truman Library in the Papers of Harry S. Truman (Charles Murphy Files and Official File 10-P).
