COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The New York Times Clippings Collection consists of newspaper clippings, printed materials, press releases, and speeches related to Harry S. Truman, Dean Acheson, Winston Churchill, George Marshall, and Walter Bedell Smith. The collection is arranged in one series, a Clippings File, which is arranged alphabetically.

The series primarily consists of newspaper articles, editorials and political cartoons. Most of the clippings in this collection relate to the daily events that occurred during the Truman administration from 1945-1953. Also included are clippings about Harry S. Truman as Senator, Vice President and former President. Specific topics include the budget, civil rights, Congress, the economy, defense, Dwight Eisenhower, foreign policy, Korea, labor, Douglas MacArthur, the Marshall Plan, politics, price control, Russia and the steel industry. Also included are clippings related to President Truman’s messages to Congress, speeches and press conferences.

The materials related to Dean Acheson cover the years of 1949-1952, while he was Secretary of State. The majority of the Winston Churchill materials pertain to his speeches from 1934-1948. The materials related to George Marshall cover the period when he was Chief of Staff of the Army, Special Representative of President Truman to China, Secretary of State, and Secretary of Defense, from 1939-1951. Also included are materials related to the Marshall Plan, which Marshall helped to implement while Secretary of State. The Walter Bedell Smith materials pertain to his service as Ambassador to the Soviet Union, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and Under Secretary of State, from 1942-1958.

Related collections at the Truman Library include the papers of Harry S. Truman and Dean Acheson and the Kansas City Star Clippings Collection.
