BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Monte Poen, a professor at Northern Arizona University, devoted a number of years to preparing an oral biography of Harry S. Truman, tentatively titled, "Speaking of Truman." He interviewed many people who had known Truman, and collected interview transcripts and other information from various historical institutions. Professor Poen was unable to complete the project, but he donated his research materials to the Truman Library in 2006.

Poen is the author of Harry S. Truman Versus the Medical Lobby: The Genesis of Medicare (1979). He has also edited two collections of letters written by Harry S. Truman, Strictly Personal and Confidential. The Letters Harry Truman Never Mailed (1982) and Letters Home by Harry Truman (1984).

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Monte Poen Papers consist of materials gathered during Poen's research on Harry S. Truman for a book he intended to write, which was never published. The papers are arranged alphabetically in a single series.

The collection consists largely of transcripts of interviews conducted by Poen or by various historical institutions. The interviewees were connected to Harry S. Truman either through his family, his Presidency, or his life in Independence, Missouri. (The folder title list indicates which interviews were conducted by someone other than Poen).

The correspondence in the collection is mostly between Poen and persons he had interviewed or intended to interview. There are some newspaper clippings and handwritten notes included with the correspondence and transcripts. There are also a few photographs of the interviewees or of Harry S. Truman, as well as a few printed materials such as pamphlets and brochures. The tape recordings made by Poen have been transferred to the Truman Library's audiovisual collection.

Related collections at the Truman Library include the papers of Merle Miller and Richard Holbrooke, and the Records of the British Broadcasting Corporation and Guggenheim Productions, Inc. These collections also consist in part of transcribed interviews concerning the life of Harry S. Truman.
