BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Gil Shaw served in the U.S. Coast Guard and participated in the funeral of former President Harry S. Truman in December 1972. A badge reflecting Shaw’s service in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War is included in the collection.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Gil Shaw contain materials relating to the presidency, death, and funeral of Harry S. Truman. There is one series in the collection, the Harry S. Truman Funeral File.

The collection includes fact sheets on Truman’s life and presidency, compiled by the Information Office of the Fifth United States Army in preparation for the funeral. It also includes extensive newspaper clippings on Truman’s death, logistical information for the former president’s funeral, and a program from the funeral service. The collection also includes sound recordings of Truman’s funeral services, which have been transferred to the Library’s audiovisual collection.
