COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Papers of Jerome H. Spingarn include information relating to his service as the Assistant Research Director of the Democratic National Committee. The papers are arranged alphabetically in a single series.

The collection mainly consists of correspondence, handwritten notes, memoranda, newspaper clippings, and published materials. Much of the collection concerns the 1952 Presidential campaign. Included are a campaign handbook, background research for speeches by President Truman, and a study of subsidies granted to businesses by the federal government.

The papers also include correspondence and other items relating to the 1948 Presidential campaign and President Truman's 1950 trip to the Northwest. There are also materials in the collection relating to George M. Elsey, Kenneth Hechler, and Mike Mansfield, and their contributions to the 1948 campaign and the 1950 trip.

Also included in the collection is an issue of The Progressive magazine that was devoted to criticism of Senator Joseph McCarthy. These papers were originally opened for research as part of the Miscellaneous Historical Documents Collection (MHDC 638). The Jerome H. Spingarn Papers were designated as a separate collection in 2012.

Related collections at the Truman Library include the Papers of George M. Elsey, Kenneth Hechler, and Clark Clifford, and the Records of the Democratic National Committee.
