COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of George W. Taylor mostly relate to his career as a government official and labor arbitrator during the Roosevelt and Truman administrations. The collection consists of one series, a Subject File, arranged alphabetically by folder title.

The collection includes letters, memorandums, press clippings, and reports pertaining to Taylor's service with the National War Labor Board from 1942 to 1945, his Chairmanship of the Wage Stabilization Board in 1950, and his other governmental positions relating to labor disputes during the Truman administration, such as the 1948 coal strike.

Also included are a booklet summarizing the 1945 Labor-Management Conference, contracts for Taylor's services as a labor consultant for the Atomic Energy Commission,  transcripts of proceedings, telegrams, published decisions and findings in labor disputes, a program for a Truman Library Fund Dinner, an invitation to the Gridiron Club, and a certificate signed by Truman. Almost all of the materials relate to Taylor's career in government, and not to his personal life or his career as a professor.

Related collections at the Truman Library include the papers of Beatrice M. Burgoon, who also served with the National War Labor Board as well as the Wage Stabilization Board; the papers of Harry S. Truman (Official File 30: National War Labor Board and Official File 15-K: Wage Stabilization Board); and the papers of John R. Steelman, who was also involved in labor mediation during this period.
