COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Edward A. Tenenbaum include articles, correspondence, printed materials, reports, handwritten notes, and other items concerning Tenenbaum’s career as an economist during and after World War II. The collection is arranged in a single Subject File.

The collection contains notes, correspondence, and fiscal reports concerning Tenenbaum’s economic surveys of Germany, Greece, Iran, Belgium, and Mexico. Many documents are related to his work with the Economic Cooperation Administrations and the International Monetary Fund. Reports and notes from his study of postwar Germany’s monetary problems, especially his project to reform German currency, can be found in the collection.

The collection also contains drafts of two books by Tenenbaum, “The German Mark” and “Today’s Money.” Another item in the collection is a firsthand report from Tenenbaum’s visit to Buchenwald Concentration Camp in Germany. He was one of the first non-captive persons from an Allied nation to set foot inside the camp, on April 11, 1945.

While most of the collection is in English, some documents are written in German or French, languages which Tenenbaum spoke fluently.

More information about Edward A. Tenenbaum and European economies after World War II can be found at the Truman Library in the papers of Charles Kindleberger, Walter Salant, and James Warren.
