COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of James A. Burkhardt consist of correspondence, printed materials, and other items concerning Burkhardt's relationship with Harry S. Truman following his service in World War I as a sergeant in Captain Truman's battery. The collection is arranged in a Subject File.

The Subject File includes letters of condolence from members of Battery D following the death of Burkhardt's son during World War II, as well as a note signed by the members of Battery D in attendance at a 1955 reunion. The series also contains a patch bearing the logo of Battery D and a Battery D membership card. In addition, the series includes correspondence with Senator Harry S. Truman regarding Burkhardt's career in the police force.

The Truman Library has the papers of a number of Truman's World War I comrades, including Verne Chaney, Vic Housholder, Edward Jacobson, Edward Meisburger, and Edward McKim.
