Oral History Interviews with
Dirk Stikker

During the period of the Truman Administration (1945-53) Stikker was a member of the Netherlands Government Delegation to the Round Table Conference on the political status of the Netherlands West Indies, 1946; member Round Table Conference with representatives of Indonesia and preparation for the independence of Indonesia, 1948; Netherlands Minister of Foreign Affairs, 1948-52; Netherlands Representative on the Council of the Organization for European Economic Cooperation, 1950; and Chairman, OEEC, 1950-52. Ambassador Stikker later, in addition to service in many other distinguished positions, was Secretary-General of NATO, 1961-64.

April 23, 1964

Stikker describes the impact of the Marshall plan upon the Netherlands and Europe. He also discusses his role as the representative from the Netherlands on the Council of the Organization for European Economic Cooperation, as well as the Chairman of OEEC.

July 14, 1970

Stikker further discusses the Marshall plan, the post-war status of "colonial dependencies" such as Indonesia, negotiations for the North Atlantic treaty, and the ending of the lend-lease program. He also describes the early workings of the Organization for European Economic Cooperation, its organizational problems with NATO and dealings with the United States' Economic Cooperation Administration.
