Alexander Wiley, unidentified. Back row, Sen. H. Alexander Smith, Sen. John Sparkman, unidentified. The ANZUS treaty (a defense treaty signed by Australia, New Zealand and the United States) was created from discussions that occurred between 1949 and culminating in the signing of the treaty on September 1, 1951, at San Francisco, California.
